Reading Awareness Week
Reading Awareness Week
19th -23rd November, 12
Advancing
your child’s passion for reading is a gift that they will redeem for their
entire life.
Therefore it is all the more important to
start nurturing the passion for reading at an early age.
By the age of one, most children
have an innate love of books. They respond to the colors contained in the
pictures, get pleasure from turning the pages and develop vocabulary, based on
the words they
hear from the pages of a book.
Children look forward to the
entertainment and socialization gained from listening to a story, either
one-on-one or at a story time session in a library. Therefore a Story Time Corner was set up in the
school to further their passion. Class I students, in collaboration with their
teachers, presented the age old stories laden with visual content and morals
for the young minds. The teachers read out their favorite tales and asked them
to anticipate the following things, while they read the book: “What's was going
on in the book? Who is the main character and how is he or she like or
different from you? Is the story unfurling the way you thought it would? What
do you think will happen next?”
The passion for reading begins to fade as it becomes
a foundational skill needed to master all subject matters in school. So in an
effort to further proficiency, all students were advised to make it a nightly
mandatory assignment.
Class II
students put their imaginative minds to test with story writing and prepared
wonderful and colorful booklets bearing the mark of young impressionable and
flexible minds.
Class
III students wrote Book Reviews
after they had read the book of their choice. They were provided with Review
sheets which clearly stated the areas they were supposed to touch upon and they
did a splendid job.
A passion for reading needs to be nurtured
throughout a child’s years of formal education; helping the emergent reader to
gain the confidence to read out loud is vital. To cater to this aspect Elocution
was conducted by Class V students, which not only showcased their talent but
also provided an insight in to ongoing multi faceted activities at Askari X,
which in turn enhance student learning. A Mushaira also helped parents
and students alike relive the golden era of Urdu poetry and class IV students
received a lot of applause for their awesome performance.
To encourage the middle school and high school
student to read for “fun and entertainment” a dramatic rendering of Allama Iqbal’s poem was presented by class IV students.
Reading ignites the imagination and
inspires learning the basic tools for success in school. It improves child
development, leading to better grades and higher graduation rates. Reading
Awareness Week provided the students the perfect time to ignite that passion
for reading.
